 Hari Raya Light-Up

2 October to 10 November 2005
Kampong Glam

Hari Raya Puasa is a special date in the Islamic calendar it signifies the end of a month-long fasting period known as Ramadan. Muslims celebrate this joyously colourful festival across the globe and is a good time for family gatherings, reconciling with loved ones, respecting elders and above all, nurturing a sense of community spirit.

It is also a time for new clothes and traditional attire, with whole families dressing up in their finest bajus (Malay for "clothes"). After a customary visit to the cemetery to remember loved ones, the fun begins with an endless round of visiting and feasting.

To really soak in the festive atmosphere, visit the bustling pasar malam (Malay for "night market") - it is the perfect place to pick up fantastic bargains on handicrafts, textiles, fashion, carpets and home furnishings. You can also look forward to feasting on an array of mouth-watering delights.

Elsewhere in Singapore, bazaars sprout up in the residential heartlands as Muslims and non-Muslims alike indulge in two of Singapore's favourite pastimes - shopping and eating.
